LCD Panel Model Numbers Explaination

This article try to explain the meaning of LCD panel model. It does not apply to all LCD panel models but most of them on the markets.

LCD panel models, for example, usually looks like LP156WF6-(SP)(K1). In the beginning is manufacturer's code, then 3 numbers (screen size), 2 letters (resolution), and 2 sets of brackets (panel type).

Common Manufacturers Codes:
  • AU Optronics: B
  • ChiMei Innolux: N
  • Chunghwa: CLAA
  • HannStar: HSD
  • Hitachi: TX
  • LG Philips: LP
  • Lucom: F2
  • Quanta: QD
  • Samsung: LTN
  • Sharp: LQ or LM

Common Screens Sizes:
  • 101 (10.1")
  • 116 (11.6″)
  • 125 (12.5″)
  • 133 (13.3″)
  • 140 (14.0″)
  • 156 (15.6″)
  • 173 (17.3″)

Common Resolution:
  • WH: 1366x768
  • WD: 1600x900
  • WF: 1920x1080
  • WU: 1920x1200
  • WQ: 2560x1440

Panel Type (First letter in the first set of brackets):
  • (Tx)(xx) = TN screen
  • (Sx)(xx) = IPS screen

LCD Pin (Second letter in the first set of brackets):
  • (xP)(xx) = 30pins
  • (xL)(xx) = 40pins

Second set of brackets is what laptop the LCD was initially manufactured for. This is not important because a lot of LCD screens are cross-compatible.

So in the example LP156WF6-(SP)(K1), it means LG Philips made 15.6" 1920x1080 IPS panel with 30pins.
